A protest against limestone mining, mineral sand extraction, and proposed wind power projects was held on May 28 in the Poonakary Divisional Secretariat area of Kilinochchi District, covering the villages of Kiranchi, Veravil, Valaipadu, Ponnaveli, and Palavi.
The demonstration began near Veravil Hospital and continued in a march to the Karpaga Vinayagar Temple in Kiranchi.
Protesters said the proposed wind power project would lead to the removal of around 8,000 coconut trees in Kiranchi alone, affecting the livelihoods of nearly 2,000 families dependent on coconut cultivation. They urged authorities to reconsider the project.
They also raised concerns over ongoing limestone and mineral sand extraction, warning that it could worsen drinking water shortages and further impact local communities. Residents stressed that development projects should not proceed without addressing environmental and livelihood concerns.
The protest was attended by villagers, religious leaders, civil society representatives, and a delegation led by Rev. Fr. Marcus, Chairman of the Mannar Citizens’ Committee.
