The 41st anniversary remembrance of the Kumuthini massacre was observed on May 15 at the Delft jetty.
On May 15, 1985, the passenger boat Kumuthini, travelling from Delft to Kurikadduwan with 64 passengers, was intercepted at sea, resulting in the killing of 36 civilians, including women, children, and the elderly.
The commemoration included a memorial Holy Mass at St. Xavier’s Church, Delft, presided over by Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Kamalraj, followed by remembrance ceremonies at the Maveli jetty memorial site. Tributes included the lighting of a memorial flame, floral offerings, and the distribution of saplings to relatives of victims.
Organized under the guidance of Visuvalingam Ruthiran, President of the Remembrance Committee, the event also featured a Mullivaikkal memorial porridge distribution as part of Mullivaikkal Genocide Remembrance Week.
Religious leaders of different faiths, relatives of victims, and members of the public took part in the observances.
