Mullivaikkal remembrance day, marking the mass civilian deaths during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s armed conflict in May 2009 were held on May 18 in the Tamil homeland and in Tamil diaspora communities worldwide.
At the main commemoration in Mullivaikkal, a declaration was read by representatives of the Mullivaikkal Remembrance Public Committee, followed by a moment of silence. Memorial flames were lit and floral tributes were offered in memory of those killed.
More than 10,000 people, including religious leaders and members of the public, participated in the observances, renewing calls for truth, justice, and accountability over the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
