Observe the forty days of Lent as a time of conversion, renewal of faith, and deeper union with God through prayer and sacrifice, the Bishop of Jaffna, Rt. Rev. Dr. Justin Gnanapragasam, has called on the faithful.

In his Lenten pastoral letter, the Bishop of Jaffna encouraged Catholics to seek inner transformation and strengthen their faith through prayer, fasting, and acts of penance. He emphasized that Lenten practices should inspire believers to respond to the needs of the poor and suffering, urging the faithful to reach out in solidarity and support those who are less fortunate.

Referring to the Year of Social Communication observed in the diocese, Bishop Gnanapragasam called on the faithful to use modern means of communication responsibly, uphold human dignity, and foster meaningful relationships. He encouraged families to limit screen time, dedicate more time to Lenten devotions, and guide children in embracing such spiritual sacrifices.

The Bishop also expressed deep concern over the growing spread of drug trafficking and substance abuse, particularly among youth. He noted with sorrow that drug distribution is increasing, especially in coastal areas where many Catholics reside, and appealed to society to support the rehabilitation of those affected while cooperating with authorities to bring offenders to justice.

Commenting on the present political climate, he observed that although numerous promises are being made to the people, many remain unfulfilled. He voiced concern about divisions among Tamil political leaders and stressed the urgent need for unity in advocating for the rights of the Tamil community, urging social leaders and intellectuals to work together to foster it.
