The 2026-27 academic year of St. Xavier’s Major Seminary in Columbuthurai, Jaffna, was inaugurated on October 1.
The ceremony was organized under the guidance of the Seminary Rector, Rev. Fr. Petrus Thayaparan. The Bishop of Jaffna, Rt. Rev. Dr. Anton Ranjith, presided over the Holy Mass held to mark the beginning of the new academic year.
Following the Mass, the ceremonial programme was held at the Rev. Fr. Joy Chrysostom Auditorium.
The programme included the presentation of certificates to students who excelled in the previous academic year, the release of the new academic calendar, and the presentation of the annual reports of St. Xavier’s Major Seminary and St. Xavier’s Institute of Theology.
The inaugural lecture was delivered by Rev. Fr. Petrus Thayaparan on the theme, “Mission of release as the Restoration of Identity and Dignity: Its Implications for the Sri Lankan Tamils Liberation Struggles”
Priests, religious men and women, and seminarians participated in the event.
