“We, who are called to live in love and goodwill, are deeply pained that we must seek to exhume the remains of our loved ones from mass graves like Chemmani,” emphasized the Jaffna District Interreligious Council in a statement addressing the Chemmani mass graves.

In alignment with United Nations Human Rights Council resolutions, the council urged that evidence relating to genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity be gathered promptly and without delay, and that appropriate legal actions be pursued accordingly.

The council also highlighted the painful questions haunting the families of the forcibly disappeared: “Are our loved ones buried in this mass grave?”

They appealed to the international community and all concerned parties in Sri Lanka to listen with compassion and to fully cooperate in ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
