A large public demonstration was held in Mannar on June 11 to strongly oppose ongoing ilmenite mining and wind power generation projects in the district. The event was organized by the Mannar Citizens’ Committee in collaboration with civil society groups, fishing associations, and other local organizations.
The protest march, led by Rev. Fr. Marcus, Chairman of the Mannar Citizens’ Committee, started from the Mannar Public Playground Road, passed through the main streets, and concluded at the Mannar Bazaar area.
During the demonstration, a petition detailing the protesters’ main demands and objections was formally handed over to the Mannar District Government Agent, with plans to forward it to the President of Sri Lanka.
The event saw the participation of Rt. Rev. Dr. Antonypillai Gnanapragasam, Bishop of Mannar; Vicar General Rev. Fr. Thamizhnesan; religious leaders; local residents; and businesspeople. Participants voiced strong concerns about the environmental and social impacts of ilmenite mining and large-scale wind energy projects on local communities and livelihoods.
