The fourth death anniversary of Rev. Fr. Maria Xavier, founder and director of Thirumarai Kalamanram, the Centre for Performing Arts (CPA), was commemorated on April 1st with a series of events held in Jaffna. The day began with a Eucharistic Mass at the Art Gallery, honoring the life and legacy of the late priest. Later in the day, a memorial lecture took place at Kalaithoothu Kalayaham.
The lecture was chaired by Professor Arunachalam Sanmugathas, former professor at the University of Jaffna, and delivered by Mrs. Krishnaveni, former head of the university’s Department of Fine Arts. Titled “Aesthetics: A Spiritual Perspective” (அழகியல்: ஓர் ஆன்மீக நோக்குநிலை), the lecture explored the deep connection between art and spirituality. The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Rev. Fr. Jebaratnam, Vicar General of the Diocese of Jaffna, Prof. Sri Sathkunaraja, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, university lecturers, clergy, religious brothers and sisters, Tamil cultural enthusiasts, members of CPA, and the general public.
Rev. Fr. Maria Xavier is remembered for his pioneering efforts in founding Thirumarai Kalamanram to preserve and promote the cultural and artistic heritage of the Tamil people, particularly through the performing arts.
