The 37th death anniversary of human rights activist Rev. Fr. Chandra Fernando, who was shot and killed at St. Mary’s Church in Batticaloa, was observed on June 6.

The event was organized by the Batticaloa District Interfaith Committee and held under the leadership of its secretary, Rev. Fr. Jegathas. A garland was placed on a portrait of Rev. Fr. Chandra Fernando, and a memorial flame was lit in his honor.

Floral tributes and silent prayers were offered at his burial site within the church grounds, accompanied by remembrance speeches celebrating his courageous legacy.

The memorial was attended by religious leaders from various faiths, committee members, members of civil society, and Rev. Fr. Chandra Fernando’s family, all of whom paid heartfelt homage.

During the civil war period in 1985, Rev. Fr. Chandra Fernando served as the head of the Batticaloa District Citizens’ Committee, a group dedicated to giving voice to the oppressed and advocating for justice. Despite facing grave threats, he courageously defended the rights of innocent detainees, often visiting military camps to secure their release — placing his own life at great risk.

On June 6, 1988, while at his parish house, Rev. Fr. Chandra Fernando was shot and killed by an unidentified armed group believed to have been operating in collaboration with the Indian Peace Keeping Force.
