In Mannar District, local communities, civic organizations, and public interest groups have been conducting a sustained series of awareness campaigns and protests against ongoing sand mining operations and wind energy projects.
On the night of September 26, authorities attempted to transport wind turbine components onto the island.
When residents sought to obstruct the movement of the vehicles, security forces reportedly employed force against women, clergy, and citizens, intimidating protesters and ensuring the components were delivered to the island.
In response to these incidents and in condemnation of the assault on Catholic clergy and the Public, the Mannar Citizens’ Group, in coordination with public, fishing, and civil society organizations, organized a major public protest and March on September 29.
The protest, led by Rev. Fr. Marcus, President of the Mannar Citizens’ Committee, commenced at the Mannar Public Sports Ground and proceeded along the main thoroughfare of Mannar Bazaar.
A petition outlining the community’s demands was formally submitted to the District Government Agent, who assured prompt and decisive action.
Rev. Fr. Marcus emphasized to the media that the demonstration would continue until satisfactory resolutions are achieved.
The march drew thousands of participants, including Catholic, Buddhist, and Hindu religious leaders, social activists, and concerned citizens from across southern Sri Lanka and Jaffna, highlighting the broad-based support for the cause.
