A road sign installed along the Paranthan–Mullaitivu Road to indicate the route to the Mullivaikkal Memorial, a site commemorating Tamil civilian deaths during the final stages of the war, was reportedly removed and demolished by the Road Development Authority on 14 September.
The Mullivaikkal Remembrance General Committee has stated that such actions affect the public’s right to remember the events associated with the Tamil community’s history and to commemorate those who lost their lives.
The committee has also questioned why the road sign directing people to the Mullivaikkal Memorial was removed, while various structures, including signboards identifying military camps, remain in several locations along the Paranthan–Mullaitivu Road.
It has further been reported that the action was carried out based on an order issued in connection with a case heard at the Mullaitivu District Court on 11 June.
The Mullivaikkal Remembrance General Committee has called for appropriate measures to protect the historical memories of the Tamil people in and around the Mullivaikkal Memorial and to safeguard the right to commemorate.
