The Jaffna Teaching Hospital has marked the 38th anniversary of the 1987 massacre, one of the darkest moments in its history.

Hospital staff, relatives, and community members gathered on 21 October to honour the people killed when Indian Army personnel stormed the hospital during the civil conflict. At the memorial, a lamp was lit, floral tributes were offered, and prayers were said for the victims. A wheelchair was also presented to a patient in memory of the late ambulance driver, Mr. Sanmugalingam

The hospital’s director, Dr. T. Sathiyamoorthy, joined doctors, nurses, and staff in paying their respects. The attack, which took place on 21 and 22 October 1987 under the command of Colonel Brar, claimed the lives of three doctors, two nurses, 21 staff members, and 47 patients.

Thirty-eight years on, the tragedy continues to stir deep sorrow and reflection across the Jaffna community.
